We are happy to announce that for the next cohort doing clinical immersion we are collaborating with
hospitals in Køge, Holbæk, Odense and Kolding. All fellows beginning their BioMedical Design-journey in September 2026 will do an observation study in a Danish hospital.
For Copenhagen fellows the host hospitals will be:
Steno Diabetes Center Sjælland in Holbæk
Sjællands Universitets Hospital in Køge Geriatric Department
For the Aarhus fellows the host hospitals will be:
Steno Diabetes Center in Odense
Odense Universitets Hospital Department of Endocrinology
and an update – the last host is now Sygehus Lillebælt – Department of Endocrinology.
Rose Henrichsen who manages hospital partnerships in the BioMedical Design team puts in a great effort to find the right hospital wards in the regional hospitals every year. We asked her about how she handles this important yet challenging task.
What has been the key interest when you had to find the next host departments for the cohort of 2026-2027?
We are facing a healthcare reform that addresses some of the greatest healthcare challenges we face: a growing aging population and a declining number of employees in the healthcare sector. When looking for host departments, we therefore want to find places where there is a potential to shed light on – and help – the challenges ahead. In this context, patients with multi-morbidity and complex conditions represent an area that truly requires innovative solutions in order to maintain the same quality of treatment and care as we can offer today.
Can you tell us about the challenges – or needs – the new fellows will face in their respective host departments?
The five host departments each face challenges that are connected to the implementation of the healthcare reform: getting treatment closer to patient’s homes; better management of transitions from hospital to general practitioner or home, and new ways of following up on chronically ill patients in a setting that fits the individual.
What is the most difficult part of getting the puzzle right when planning where the new fellows are going to do their observation study?
It is a balance between the sizes of the departments, and how many fellows they can host, while also making sure that international fellows are distributed equally among departments. We always have to consider that as it can be an extra challenge for a fellow, if he or she doesn’t understand Danish, or if a healthcare professional at the hospital is not comfortable speaking English. Then we make sure that international fellows have a ‘buddy’ among the group who can help out, or a large enough department with the possibility to find English speaking employees.
