The Observation

During his time in the BioMedical Design programme, Niklas identified an important gap in hospital care: daily many patients are at risk of malnutrition. Malnutrition is common among hospitalised patients and can have serious consequences. Patients who are malnourished can have longer hospital stays, a higher risk of readmission, and a higher risk of complications. Yet nutritional screening is often a task that healthcare professionals struggle to find time for alongside their many other responsibilities.

The Need

Early identification of malnutrition can make a real difference. When a patient is identified as being at risk, healthcare professionals can provide targeted nutritional support and improve the patient’s chances of a better recovery.
However, nutritional screening is usually done manually, and there are many other tasks competing for healthcare professionals’ time. As a result, only around one in three patients currently receives a nutritional screening.

The challenge is finding a way to identify patients at risk without adding another time-consuming task to an already busy workflow.

The Solution
Calces.IO is developing an automated nutritional screening solution that uses information already available in hospital medical records. Instead of requiring healthcare professionals to screen each patient manually, the system analyses existing patient data to identify those who may be at risk of malnutrition. This allows healthcare staff to focus their time on the patients who need nutritional support.

By making nutritional screening an automated part of the hospital workflow, Calces.IO aims to help hospitals screen more patients, use resources more effectively, and ensure that more patients receive the nutritional care they need.
