Customy 2019-2020
A way to help ostomy patients get a custom-sized hole in the stoma bag to ensure a proper fit and placement of the collection bag.
The Customy team has identified a need related to ostomy care at the department of surgical Gastroenterology at Rigshospitalet. The problem shows when patients need to cut a hole in the barrier to ensure a proper fit and placement of the collection bag. Currently, most patients or healthcare assisting personnel use scissors or fixed size ostomy barrier cutters. The former is only suitable for patients with a regular circular stoma. An improper barrier hole-shape and placement may lead to clinical complications and lower quality of life.
The Solution
We have proposed a 3-step solution consisting of digital capturing of the stoma shape, sending the information to a producer and manufacturing barriers with tailored holes using either 3D-printing or laser cutting. Validation activities have indicated technical feasibility of some elements of the project but further research needs to be done especially on adhesive materials compatible with the barrier and testing the prototype with users.
