Kids & Meds 2023-2024

We are developing a pill-swallowing device designed to make it quick and easy for children to swallow pills. Our goal is to transform pill-swallowing into a simple, even enjoyable experience. By addressing this need, we aim to reduce emotional stress for children and parents, lower healthcare costs, and ensure children receive optimal treatments.

The Need

Most children struggle to swallow pills the first time they try. Even with practice, 10-15% of  children still cannot swallow pills successfully, leading to frustration for both children and their parents. While some alternative formulations are available, they come with limitations, including higher costs and an increased risk of incorrect dosage. In pediatric wards, children who cannot swallow crucial oral medications may need a nasogastric tube or intravenous administration. Alternatively, a less effective treatment may be used if specific formulations aren’t available – such as opting for a broad-spectrum antibiotic instead of standard penicillin. These difficulties with medication intake are common not only in hospitals but also in home care settings.
